Dollar spot disease aka silver dollar grass disease is not the most horrid disease out there, but it is quite unsightly to say the least. If you haven’t guessed it yet, it got the name because of the silver dollar sized spots that appear on the surface of the turf. This is particularly daunting for a golf course because it is so unsightly. This disease is common in the early summer, late summer, and early fall months amongst humid weather and cooler evenings. The disease is typically attributed to the fungus Sclerotinia homoeocarpa, but other fungi may be involved. The damage caused by the disease is generally minimal and only sustained on the leaf blades. You definitely want to bag your clippings when mowing under grass infected with dollar spot disease. Fungicides can help cure the disease, but simply applying fertilizer and adhering to sound watering practices usually minimizes the disease in itself. Only rare cases justify the use of fungicides.
